January 9th, 1915 marked the return of India's most renowned Pravasi (Overseas Indian), Mahatma Gandhi, to the country to then enter the struggle for Independence. In recognition of Gandhi and the immeasurable contributions since ofnearly 35 million People of Indian Origin (PIOs) and Non Resident Indians (NRIs) that live overseas today, the Government of India celebrates Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas (PBD). Launched in 2003,PBD is celebrated annually to acknowledge and celebrate the achievements of the Indian Diaspora worldwide.
